5 Tips to Help You Stay Committed This Holiday Season

As much as we love the season changing (ever so slightly) we all know what’s ahead of us… the holiday season! This means plenty of parties, baked goods, PUMPKIN everything, mama’s home style cooking and the not so welcomed post-holiday weight gain.

Every year we want to stay healthy and committed to our goals. But some girlfriend starts shouting “YOLO” and there we go tossing our hands in the air with them and decide to just let ourselves be free. That one day leads to another and by the time you know it, were watching the ball drop on new year’s eve feeling like a busted can of Pillsbury biscuits (or maybe that is just me). We know the cycle and every year we wished we had stayed a little more committed. Well, this year I want to help you break the cycle!!!!

Now, I am not saying you have to hide yourself from all social events or eat like a rabbit. I am saying we should allow ourselves to have a healthy balance of fun while maintaining our personal health and fitness goals. Who says fun = eating and drinking like queens anyway?

This year, let’s make a promise to ourselves that we will stay committed no matter how many times we may fall off. That we will TRY OUR BEST to stay healthy and fit by practicing better behaviors. I say try because as long as you stay cautious of your actions you will make better choices!!!! Here are a few tips that have helped me stay committed

1 .Its ok to enjoy yourself but follow the 80/20 rule
Eating is the culprit of weight gain. Eating to healthy will make you go crazy and eating too much makes you magically grow. Try following the 80/20 rule. This allows you to eat healthy 80% of the time while enjoying yourself with no-so-healthy foods 20% of the time. This can be scheduled for 1- 2 cheat meals a week ( I prefer this option because it gives me something to look forward to) or 80% of your daily intake can be healthy while 20% is not. Start off with a healthy breakfast!! I find if I eat bad in the morning, I am most likely to eat bad all day. Most importantly, find what works best for you and allows you to stay on track. I promise the more you practice this rule, the more that 20% becomes less. Don’t follow diets, fads, or starve yourself. Find that balance that will control your eating habits and allow you to stick with them!

2- Make a commitment to workout at least 3-4x a week no matter what! NO EXCUSES!
With a busy schedule it’s so hard to find time to work out. So I look at the week ahead and decide what days I have free to work out and commit myself to those days. If something happens, I don’t skip, I make sure I use a non-workout day and makeup the workout. The rule is to never take more than 2 days off! I have found that if I take more than 2 days off, my body gets lazy and I want to skip a few more days which leads to me not working out for months. Make working out a habit and you’ll soon feel like it’s just part of your everyday life!

3- Keep your workouts FUN!
It’s hard to stay motivated all the time especially if you work out alone. I try to keep my workouts fun and change it up by joining group exercise classes at my local gym like Spin or bodyweight classes or purchase Groupon deals for bootcamps/studio classes. I find that if I pay for a specific class I am more likely not to skip out and waste my money. Find exercise you enjoy or want to learn and commit to them. You will find that working out with others (even strangers) can help keep you motivated, heck you might even meet a new friend 

4 – Set small goals and let everyone know to help you stay accountable!
Start off with making short term goals for yourself. Right them down and decide how you will attack them daily/weekly. Post them on your mirror or somewhere you can see daily so you don’t forget. I like to start off with short commitments because I find them to be more attainable. Once I see the changes, I am more likely to keep pushing forward because. Sometimes if we set goals that are too high and we don’t get there fast enough, we tend to fall off. So stick to something small and set new goals once you have reached them. While you are at it, tell your friends, family and post it on social media. Let the world know you are on a mission and you want them there to support you along the way. Reach out to friends close to you or your family and ask them if they would like to partake in your journey. You will be surprise to see how many people will follow-up and ask how you are progressing and join you from time to time.

5 – Don’t beat yourself up if you fall down – Most IMPORTANT!

We are human and no one is perfect!!!! Often we find ourselves guilty for eating something we know is not healthy. Most of us throw a pity party and decide to throw our arms up and say the hell with this! Which leads to a day full of binge eating, followed by weeks, month etc. Don’t let a mistakes get you down or allow you to feel like you have ruined all your hard work. We didn’t get to where we are today in just one day, everything takes time!!! Pick yourself up, be ok with your decisions and be determined to kick ass the next day!!! Drink plenty of water the next day, start off with a healthy breakfast, take a deep breath and understand it will be ok!!!! Don’t let this be the downfall because you know where this leads!!!! I can’t tell you how much this has happened to me. If I gave up then, I would have never been where I am at today. SO don’t give up..EVER!
